BMW ALPINA B4 S BITURBO

Transmission

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission has been explicitly adapted in cooperation with ZF for the requirements of BMW ALPINA automobiles and offers exemplary shift comfort with a pronounced sporty characteristic.

The adapted mechatronics and a special torque converter ensure that the high power output is transmitted with maximum efficiency and comfort to the driven wheels.

ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC is not just the description for the traditional shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel, but also means that the transmission software is explicitly tailored for every drivetrain type.

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission combined with ALPINA typical high torque output at low engine speeds allows effortless, relaxed and economical driving in high gears and outstanding cruising comfort on long journeys. Simultaneously the hardware design of the transmission does not require any significant reduction in torque when changing gear and allows for impressively dynamic and very fast gear changes under full load. As such the transmission plays a crucial role in facilitating very quick acceleration during dynamic driving but also plays an important part in reducing fuel consumption thanks to BMW Efficient Dynamics Technologies such as the ECO PRO mode as well as the Auto Start Stop function.

Transmission - Modes

Automatic Mode is configured with a clear focus on driving comfort. In this mode gear shifts are performed rapidly and smoothly, without any noticeable interruption in power delivery and in perfect harmony with the powerful, high-torque engines.

The now even more dynamic Sport Mode noticeably shortens the time it takes for the next gear to engage and depending on engine load significantly moves the shift points up the rev range. Accelerator inputs are carried out immediately, full throttle respectively kick-down will implement multi-simultaneous downshifts and optimal acceleration.

In Manual Mode all relevant parameters are configured for pronounced dynamics and gear changes are performed exclusively using the shift buttons on the rear of the steering wheel. In this mode gear changes are super fast and take just a fraction of second. The currently selected gear is displayed in the instrument cluster. Automatic upshifts can be suppressed in combination with the Dynamic Performance Control setting Sport+ or DSC Off.

The disclosed fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are measured according to WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) and converted to NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) for comparison purposes. Depending on your country, vehicle related taxes or other duties may be based on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data which differs from that shown here.

Errors and changes excepted.

Information on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, including a listing of all offered new vehicles is available at all sales offices free of charge or online at www.energieetikette.ch. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of a vehicle do not only depend on the efficient utilization of the fuel by the vehicle, but are also influenced by the driving behavior, the chosen tyre dimension and other nontechnical factors. CO2 is the greenhouse gas that is primary responsible for global warming. The average CO2 emission for all registered new vehicles in 2019 is 137 g/km.
